LI woman: Medicare denied coverage for surgery

A Ridge woman says she has been denied health insurance coverage for preventative treatment against cancer.

Sandy Meir, 65, says Medicare won't cover a procedure to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes because she has not contracted cancer. Meir says Medicare has classified the surgery as "experimental," despite her family's history of breast cancer and a positive test for a gene linked to the disease.

Dr. Charles Mann, Meir's gynecologist, says the lack of insurance coverage is "not good patient care and it's not good medicine."

Meir says she has contacted local politicians for their support and is using Facebook to connect with other people in similar situations.
