New regulations for waits on airport tarmacs

Officials say three hours is the longest passengers will ever be stuck on an airport tarmac again.

New federal regulations went into effect yesterday. After three hours, planes must return to a gate unless the captain decides it is unsafe to do so or if it would interfere with airport operations.

After two hours, the airline must provide food, water and make sure there is a working bathroom on the plane.

Airlines breaking the rule face a maximum fine of more than $27,000 per passenger.
