LIPA takes step toward building wind farm off LI

? Taking a cue from the federal government, yesterday LIPA took another step toward building a wind farm off the South Shore.

Wednesday, the federal government approved the nation?s first offshore wind farm. Today, the LIPA Board of Trustees voted to spend $4 million to study the impact of such a farm.

The 350-megawatt wind farm would be located in the Atlantic Ocean about 15 miles off the Rockaways. It is a different location from an earlier proposal.

Con Ed and the New York State Power Authority are also funding the feasibility study.

Fishermen and environmentalists are already closely watching LIPA?s actions. Officials say the farm couldn?t be built until 2017 at the earliest.
