Cop from LI hailed as hero

An NYPD officer from Holbrook is being hailed as a hero after helping thwart a bomb attempt in Times Square.

The NYPD says Officer Wayne Rhatigan was patrolling Times Square on horseback yesterday when a street vendor alerted him to a smoking SUV at the corner of Broadway and West 45th Street.

The smell of gunpowder convinced Rhatigan that the vehicle could explode at any second, leading him to grab a pair of rookie cops and quickly clear the area.

Mayor Bloomberg treated Officer Rhatigan to dinner last night at a Times Square restaurant.
