Ground broken on new Canon headquarters

? Camera maker Canon broke ground on its new headquarters in Melville today.

The company?s move is expected to bring thousands of jobs to Suffolk including 1,200 from the company?s old Lake Success headquarters and 800 new jobs.

Gov. David Paterson, Sen. Charles Schumer and Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy attended the groundbreaking ceremony.

?It?s a lot of high-paying jobs and we hope it will say to other corporations throughout the country and the world [that] Long Island is a great place to locate your headquarters and bring even more jobs here,? Schumer said.

The construction project is expected to save or create 2,000 jobs and should be completed by the end of the year.
