LI couple allegedly stole Medicaid benefits

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice says a Great Neck couple stole more than $54,000 in undeserved Medicaid benefits.

Rabi Kamel, 53, and Siona Kamel, 42, are both charged with second-degree grand larceny, second-degree welfare fraud and offering a false instrument for filing.

Officials say between June 1, 2003 and May 31, 2008, the Kamels applied for and received Medicaid benefits totaling $54,347. The Kamels allegedly claimed their income was less than $38,000 per year for a family of eight.

Officials say the couple was hiding hundreds of thousands of dollars in bank accounts that belonged to their children and corporate accounts in the name of the Manhattan jewelry store Rabi Kamel owned.

The Kamels' attorney claims the couple received help filing their forms from an accountant who was arrested for fraud in an unrelated case.
