Silly Bandz craze irks LI teachers

Silly Bandz, the colorful rubber band bracelets, have been selling out in stores across Long Island, but teachers say they can be both a distraction and a hazard.

Keelin Gagnon, the owner of Shiva's Hallmark in Franklin Square, says more than 500 packages of Silly Bandz sold out in a day and a half.

To keep up with the demand, Sweeties Candy Cottage in Huntington says it expanded its hours of operation.

However, some educators say it's distracting when students play with and trade Silly Bandz in class. Furthermore, some kids are wearing so many bracelets on their arms that they're cutting off their circulation.

Last week, the Deer Park School District superintendent issued a statement banning the bracelets.
