Deer Park woman arraigned in shaken baby death

A Deer Park woman accused of shaking her infant niece to death pleaded not guilty Friday to reckless assault charges.

Paola Baez, 22, was arraigned and held on $350,000 cash bail. Officials say Baez is in the country illegally.

Police say Baez was babysitting her 11-month-old niece March 17 and allegedly shook the child violently because she was crying.

Investigators say Baez brought the baby to the hospital and claimed the girl had fallen off a swing. The baby died three days later without regaining consciousness.

"The trauma to her brain was so extensive that doctors have equivocated it to a major motor vehicle accident," says Assistant District Attorney Elena Tomaro.
