Long Beach man accused in neighbor's murder

A Long Beach man has been extradited from Virginia and charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of his neighbor, police say.

According to authorities, Casey Fitzgerald, 20, gunned downed Ernest Cummings, Jr., 46, a month ago following an argument over their dogs. Police say Fitzgerald has been on the run since the murder.

Fitzgerald's relatives, who were present at his arraignment, say he was defending himself.

"Ernest Cummings was trying to attack my son," says Fitzgerald's mother, Diane Merchant. "He was telling my son he was going to kill him."

Fitzgerald is being held without bail. He will be back in court May 11.
