Cops: 12-year-old girl sexually assaulted at mall

? Police say they have arrested a Mattituck man and charged him with sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl at the Smith Haven Mall.

Officials say 21-year-old Matthew McAvoy engaged in a criminal sex act in a restroom corridor near the food court Saturday night.

Police say the girl was alone at the mall when she met McAvoy. He allegedly told her he was a student at a local high school.

In court today, prosecutors say McAvoy signed a confession admitting to sexually abusing the girl.

Police say McAvoy left a drug rehab program the day before the alleged sexual act happened.

McAvoy was charged with two felony counts of first-degree criminal sex act and second-degree sexual abuse and was arraigned today in Central Islip. Bail was set at $100,000 cash.
