Construction begins on Wantagh Pkwy. path rail

Preparations began today for the construction of a guide rail separating the bike path along the Wantagh State Parkway from the road.

The northbound lanes were closed off to enable crews to build a rail along four and a half miles of the bike path to protect pedestrians and bikers.

The rail follows a 2009 crash in which a drunken motorcyclist veered off the road and killed 19-year-old Matthew Scarpati on the bike path.

The Scarpati family says the state waited too long to start the $800,000 project.

Hundreds of joggers and cyclists will hold a fundraiser June 6 to promote safety and honor Scarpati's memory.
