Nassau police hold gun buyback program

The Nassau County Police Department held its sixth gun buyback program Saturday, taking more than 100 illegal guns off the streets.

The event was held at Christian Light Missionary Baptist Church in Long Beach. Those turning in an illegal handgun received $200 without having to answer any questions. In four hours, police collected 135 guns.

"If we could get one gun off the streets, it just means so much," says Deanna Cruse, of Long Beach, who lost three relatives to gun violence.

Police say they've taken 1,500 illegal weapons off the streets since the gun buyback began a year and a half ago. The county says the program is credited with reducing gun-related crime by 32 percent.
