Business owners sound off on Mangano's assessment plan

A public hearing on Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano?s assessment system reforms was held in Mineola yesterday.

Mangano?s new plan requires businesses who challenge their property assessments to have an appraisal by Oct. 1 or face a $5,000 fine. He says assessment challenges cost the county more than $100 million a year and that the changes will alleviate that burden.

Lawmakers also discussed alternatives, such as changing the deadlines for assessment challenges and notices.

The county executive?s plan must be voted on by the full Legislature before it goes into effect. The next full legislative session is June 2.
