Wyandanch school budget voted down
Some residents leaving the polling place in Wyandanch tonight say the budget that included a near 14 percent tax hike was defeated by a 2 to 1 margin.
The Wyandanch superintendent, Dr. Pless Dickerson, said earlier in the night that he had suspicions the budget would be voted down.
Wyandanch is among a handful of school districts in Suffolk County that are the most dependent on state aid, which was recently slashed by $172 million.
From here, Wyandanch school officials will start from scratch and create a new budget, with more cuts that may include teacher layoffs and program eliminations. If the second budget is defeated, the school district will move into a contingency budget.
