Officials: Beware of real estate scams

As the housing market warms up, the New York Department of State is warning residents to beware of real estate scams.

Several homeowners say they have encountered phony real estate agents who are taking their money but not selling their homes.

Department of State representative Gabe Ross says the department has received more than 300 complaints since January.

Ross says there are several ways to protect yourself from such scams.

He says homebuyers and sellers should always get recommendations on all agents and sales persons. Ross also suggests to make sure all agents are properly licensed for New York State.
