Lazio unveils Greg Edwards as running mate

(AP) ? Republican candidate for governor Rick Lazio hasannounced that Chautauqua County Executive GregEdwards will be his running mate. Lazio, a former congressman from Long Island who hasn't yet wonhis party's nomination, adds geographic balance to the ticket withthe choice from western New York. Edwards was introduced at a press conference in ManhattanThursday afternoon. He's 49 and in his second term as countyexecutive in the lightly populated rural county southwest ofBuffalo. Edwards is the first running mate chosen in the race. TheRepublicans will nominate a candidate at their convention in twoweeks. Lazio faces Steve Levy, the Suffolk County executive, andCarl Paladino, a Buffalo developer aligned with GOP tea partysupporters.
