Hearing held on future of Plum Island

A public hearing was held tonight in Greenport over the future of the Plum Island research lab.The property has been owned by the government for the past century, but Congress has ordered that the animal research facility be closed and the property sold.According to the government, the 840-acre island is worth between $50-$80 million and the proceeds from a sale would help pay for a new research center in Kansas. Many who attended the meeting tonight say they want the area to become a national park and that selling Plum Island would be wrong.
