Construction on LI roads still causing headaches for beachgoers

? Many Long Islanders will be packing up for the beaches next weekend as Memorial Day kicks off the summer season, but continuous road construction may put a damper on plans.

Some residents are wondering when years of Long Island beach road construction will finally be over. The repairs on the Sloop Channel Bridge were supposed to be complete five years ago, but crews are still working.

In addition, critics say New York has wasted thousands of dollars by permanently closing the third northbound Wantagh Parkway lane after a biker was killed on the bike path last year. Officials say the guide rail the state has promised to build would be at least as safe.
