Massapequa teen diagnosed with bacterial meningitis

The Nassau County Health Department has issued a warning tonight after a Massapequa teen has been diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.

The Health Department has released limited information. Only that the teen is from Massapequa and is 16 years old.

Bacterial meningitis is extremely contagious. According to the Health Department, 11 percent of victims die and 20 percent have permanent disabilities.

Symptoms of bacterial meningitis include high fever, headaches, stiff neck, nausea and sensitivity to light.

Dr. Lawrence Eisentstein, Deputy County Health Commissioner says those experiencing all of these symptoms should seek medical treatment immediately.
