Fire destroys church, damages surrounding stores

A massive fire damaged a strip mall and closed Nassau Road in Roosevelt yesterday morning.

Officials say more than six fire departments worked to put out the blaze.

Fire officials say the fire started inside the Jesus Way Crusade Church and rapidly spread. They say it took about 40 minutes to put out and heavy smoke damaged at least four other stores.

Nobody inside the stores was injured. Officials say four firefighters sustained non-life threatening injuries and are expected to be OK.

The fire marshal has not yet released the cause of the fire.
