Home sales rise in April

Sales of new homes soared by 15 percent last month.

Analysts say buyers were racing to secure a government tax credit that expired at the end of April.

In another sign the economy may be doing better, orders of durable goods jumped by almost 3 percent last month, more than twice as much as expected. Durable goods are products that last at least three years and range from refrigerators to airplanes.
