Officials: Police SUV hits sunbather in Long Beach

A sunbather was hit by a police vehicle yesterday in Long Beach.

Officials say Officer DiMarco was driving a Dodge Durango near Laureltown Boulevard at the time of the accident. DiMarco says he made a visual check of the beach, but was unable to see 43-year-old Marshall Starkman, of Oceanside, who was sitting in a chair on the beach.

Starkman was struck by the right tires of the SUV and sustained fractures to his neck and ribs, according to authorities.

He was taken by helicopter to Nassau University Medical Center and admitted in serious but stable condition.

It is unclear why the police SUV was on the beach. However, a witness tells News 12 Long Island he flagged down the police vehicle after seeing a swimmer in distress.
