Mom honors slain soldier by fulfilling promise

A Bay Shore mother whose son was killed fighting in Iraq has made it her mission to help his fellow soldiers.

Dorine Kenney created Jacob's Light Foundation following the death of her son Jacob, who had joined the military after 9/11. The not-for-profit sends care packages and letters to troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Kenney says her son was the inspiration for the organization. In one of his last letters home, Jacob wrote his mother to ask if she would send items to friends who didn't receive packages from home.

"He was a humanitarian," she says.
