3 dead in Oyster Bay 2-car crash

The holiday weekend took a tragic turn in Oyster Bay after three people were killed in a crash Sunday night.

The crash happened just before 11 p.m. on Route 106. Police say an Old Brookville officer clocked 23-year-old Israel Maldonado driving 76 mph before the vehicle went around a curve and hit a Jeep.

Maldonado, his 19-year-old cousin, Jose Suazo, and the driver of the Jeep, 38-year-old Peter Sherlock, of East Norwich, were all killed in the crash.

Police say the officer triggered his lights and sirens and followed Maldonado's Nissan. The vehicle struck the Jeep soon after. Police say they don't know whether Maldonado knew he was being followed.

According to authorities, Maldonado did not have a license.
