Police remove inert hand grenade found on road
(AP) - Authorities have removed a hand grenadeand reopened several roadways of a New York City suburb that wereclosed for about an hour after police were called to investigate asuspicious device.
Nassau County police say the hand grenade did not appear to befunctional. There were no injuries.
Arson and bomb squad investigators were called to Merrick Avenuebetween Hempstead Turnpike and Charles Lindbergh Boulevard in EastMeadow about 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Police say a passing motorist had spotted the grenade on asidewalk.
It was removed and taken to an undisclosed location.
The roadways were reopened about 7:15 p.m.
