Dolphin dies after washing ashore at Gilgo Beach

A dolphin that washed ashore yesterday at Gilgo Beach has died.

Chopper 12 was over the scene as beachgoers tried to assist the animal, which was later rescued by crews.

The Riverhead Foundation says the six-foot dolphin was at Atlantis Marine World when it passed away this morning at 9:30 a.m. Officials say they worked all night to nurse the dolphin back to health.

Officials believe the mammal was injured and had a wound or lesion on its tail or back end.

Rescuers also say the dolphin's breathing was stressed at the time.
