Official: NYC-Italy flight malfunctions on takeoff

(AP) - An American Airlines official says a flight fromNew York City to Milan, Italy, experienced a mechanical malfunctionduring takeoff and had to be returned to its gate.

There were no injuries in Saturday night's incident involvingFlight 198 at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Airline spokeswoman Rhonda Rathje says the aircraftwas inspected and taken out of service.

The passengers were placed on a different aircraft, which tookoff at 10:16 p.m.

Rathje said she didn't know when the flight was originallyscheduled to take off. But she said it was some time after 9 p.m. that the airplane began experiencing problems.
