Teen faces manslaughter charges in death of LI woman

A Freeport teen is charged with manslaughter in the death of a Hempstead woman.

Kayla Gerdes, 18, was indicted on 28 counts today, including manslaughter and driving while impaired by drugs.

Police say Gerdes was high when she struck and killed 69-year-old Rebecca Twine outside Twine's home in April.

Prosecutors say police recovered a prescription pad that Gerdes apparently stole from a Manhattan doctor, as well as a pill bottle containing 22 oxycodone pills and 29 Xanax pills.

Gerdes' attorney claims the teen accidentally stepped on the gas instead of the brake and took the drugs after the crash.

If convicted, Gerdes faces up to 59 years behind bars.
