Nassau Leg. OKs funds for early retirement program

The Nassau County Legislature approved the borrowing of $86 million for an early retirement program for county employees yesterday.

The program was proposed by Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano.

The measure passed despite a disagreement between Democrats and Republicans. The county budget had earmarked $26 million for the program and Democrats wanted to spend just the allotted amount. Republicans favored borrowing the $86 million and using the other funds as a budget cushion.

The incentive program is designed to get older, higher paid workers off the county's payroll.
