Dead whale washes ashore at Jones Beach

A dead beached baby whale washed ashore two miles east of the Jones Beach water tower at around 9 a.m. yesterday morning.

Officials say the whale is a humpback, about 25 to 30 feet long and 4 to 5 years old.

The Riverhead Foundation transported the whale off the beach. Officials say they will conduct an autopsy to determine the whale's cause of death. Experts say humpbacks usually live as long as humans.
