Residents want taps back at Cold Spring Harbor

The Town of Huntington has removed water taps connected to Cold Spring Harbor after the Suffolk County Health Department said the water source could contain toxic chemicals.

Residents say they're upset the taps were removed without a public hearing on the topic first.

According to the health department, the water source was considered unauthorized, which means it was never regulated or tested. Typically, authorized water sources on Long Island undergo rigorous testing several times a year, officials say.

Environmental groups and experts say dumping over the years may very well have polluted the water in Cold Spring Harbor, but some residents say they've been drinking the water for 50 years.
