LI marine ecologist calls BP response appalling

Long Islander and head of the Blue Ocean Institute Dr. Carl Safina has been to the Gulf twice and says BP?s response to the oil spill is appalling.

Safina is a nationally acclaimed marine ecologist. After visiting the Gulf, he says the toll the spill is taking on residents is as devastating as the impact on marine life.

Safina hopes President Barack Obama will use the disaster to implement an energy policy that focuses on renewable resources.

"When you see countries like China or Haiti using energy that we can't seem to figure out how to use, it's a national disgrace,? Safina says.

Safina is planning to return to the Gulf next week.
