Owner of vehicle that killed Hempstead doctor pleads not guilty

? The owner of a van that killed a Hempstead doctor on her front lawn pleaded not guilty to manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and drug charges Wednesday.

Officials say Brian Steele was inside the van when his girlfriend, Kayla Gerdes, mowed down Dr. Rebecca Twine-Wright in April.

Officials say Gerdes was driving Steele?s van while high on drugs.

Gerdes was arraigned yesterday on upgraded charges, including manslaughter, and faces up to 59 years in prison.

Steele's attorney, Michael DerGarabedian, says the charges against his client just don't make sense.

Steele is being held on $50,000 bail and is due back in court in October.
