Suspicious package probed in Merrick

A bomb scare halted shopping at a Walbaums in Merrick Saturday evening.

Police shut down the Walbaums shopping center on Merrick Road for about two hours while they investigated a suspicious package.

A Walbaums employee says he believes the scare may have been a prank by local teenagers.

Investigators say the suspicious package turned out to be garbage in a bag.

This was the second bomb scare in Nassau County in the past two days. Yesterday the King Kullen shopping center in Bellmore was closed and stores evacuated after a suspicious package was reported in the parking lot.

According to police, that package was found to be a suitcase with household items in it.
