Officials: Girl pulled from Long Beach waters dies

Officials say a 12-year-old girl has died after being pulled from the waters off Long Beach yesterday afternoon.

The girl, who was identified by Long Beach city manager as Nicole Suriel, had been missing in the surf for 90 minutes.

According to fire officials, Suriel was one of 24 kids and three teachers from Columbia Secondary School in Harlem at the beach on a class trip. One of the teachers went into the water to rescue her, but also had to be rescued, officials say.

Suriel was unresponsive when she was pulled from the ocean and was taken to Long Beach Medical Center.

Long Beach Fire Chief Scott Kemins says there were no lifeguards on duty and that swimming was not allowed. He says signs were posted at all of the beach's entrances.
