Police say a baby sitter caring for a 3-year-old girl who drowned in a backyard pool yesterday in Lawrence has died.

Canales-Mejia was playing in the Beechwood Drive pool with 3-year-old Naama Markovits and minutes later, a 5-year-old who lives at the house found them floating in the deep end.

Police say the 5-year-old told a painter working in the front of the house that the sitter and toddler were "dead in the pool."

Officials say the painter pulled them out of the pool, tried to perform CPR on both of them and called 911.

Both were rushed to St. John's Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway, where the toddler was pronounced dead.

Canales-Mejia was placed on a ventilator in intensive care, but later died.
