Fisherman in hot water after catching great white shark

A fisherman who reeled in a giant great white shark off Montauk last weekend is under federal investigation.

Because great whites are an endangered species, anglers are supposed to release them back into the water if they catch one.

The man caught the fish during a shark-fishing tournament hosted by a yacht club. The club told Newsday the fisherman didn?t know about the catch-and-release policy.

Federal officials tell News 12 Long Island the possible fine could range from $500 to $50,000.
