Judge signs off on new deal for 9/11 responders

(AP) - A judge has signed an order approving asettlement that could pay more than $700 million to thousands of9/11 responders exposed to toxic World Trade Center dust.

U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein heard sometimes emotionaltestimony at hearing from victims on Wednesday before signing offon the deal. It still must be approved by 95 percent of theplaintiffs before becoming final.

The exact amount paid depends on how many people take the deal.Lawyers presented payout estimates that would pay just over $3,000to people worried they may become ill. Up to $1.8 million would goto the estates of those who died.
