Funeral held for toddler who drowned in Lawrence pool

? A Lawrence family said goodbye to a 3-year-old girl yesterday who drowned in a backyard pool in Lawrence with her baby sitter.

Police say 3-year-old Naama Markovits was playing in the Beechwood Drive pool with her baby sitter, 32-year-old Lorena Canales-Mejia, Wednesday and minutes later, a 5-year-old who lives at the house found them floating in the deep end.

According to authorities, a painter working at the house pulled them out of the pool, tried to perform CPR on both of them and called 911.

Both were rushed to St. John's Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway where Markovits died upon arrival. Canales-Mejia, of Inwood, was placed on a ventilator in intensive care, but later died.

Police believe Canales-Mejia was holding Markovits in the shallow end of the pool when she ended up in the deep end and drowned.

The funeral for Canales-Mejia has not yet been planned.
