4 swimmers rescued off Long Beach

Witnesses say four people were rescued today in the waters off Long Beach, just days after a 12-year-old drowned.

According to Jackie Salorio, of Long Beach, four people from Queens were swimming when they began having trouble staying above the water and needed to be rescued. Salorio, who was on the beach, says she joined other bystanders and several off-duty police officers to pull the swimmers to safety.

A 21-year-old man who was rescued was taken to the hospital and is expected to be fine.

Lifeguards are not on duty during the week until June 28. So far this season, two people have already drowned in Long Beach.

Despite calls to have lifeguards on duty beginning Memorial Day weekend, Long Beach City Manager Charles Theofan says the beach's most-experienced lifeguards are school teachers and aren't available until next week.
