Massapequa student graduates against all odds

Proud families at Amityville Memorial High School cheered as the 200 graduates ascended the stage today to receive their diplomas, but none were prouder than the parents of Anthony Abizeid.

Abizeid, 21, was born with mental retardation and seizure disorder, which means he cannot walk or talk. His mother, Reine Abizeid, says she was told by doctors her son wouldn't live past 9 years old, but he proved them wrong.

Abizeid, of Massapequa, received his education through home schooling, but since he lives in the Amityville School District, the high school welcomed him to graduate with the class of 2010.

"I said, 'yes,' and we figured out a way to get it done," says Amityville Memorial High School Principal Scott Andrews.
