Nassau Legislature approves assessment overhaul

Nassau lawmakers approved County Executive Ed Mangano?s plan to overhaul the commercial property tax assessment system yesterday evening.Only Republican members of the Legislature were present when the bill was voted on. Democrats said they did not attend because the bill needed to be submitted seven days before the meeting and that it wasn't.

Mangano has long pledged to fix the assessment system, saying 46 percent of the county's debt is caused by errors. He says the current assessment system wastes millions of taxpayer dollars each year.

Part of the new plan includes fining commercial property owners $4,000 if they challenge their assessments without an appropriate appraisal. The plan also requires assessments every four years, instead of every year.
