Statue destroyed outside American Legion Post

Police are stepping up security at the American Legion Post in Massapequa this weekend after vandals struck last night.

An American eagle statue outside the post was smashed to pieces as was a concrete pillar.

The vandals were caught on tape by security cameras. Police are examining the color images and have partial descriptions of the suspects.

"We have our soldiers right now fighting in a war for our freedom and we have these people that just disrespect it, it's terrible," veteran Dennis Deitrich, of Massapequa, says.

American Legion members say the nearly $1,000 in damage is covered by insurance, but it is disappointing nonetheless.
