Relative: Arm of man in fireworks incident can't be saved

A 36-year-old man was rushed to the hospital yesterday evening after mortar fireworks blew off his left arm.

Police say Eric Smith, of Islip Terrace, was shooting mortars from a metal tube at his home on Fairview Avenue when the explosive shot out of the launcher and struck him in the arm, severing it from his shoulder.

Smith was rushed to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where doctors tried to re-attach the arm. However, Smith's grandfather told News 12 Long Island today, that the arm was not able to be re-attached. Smith is being treated at Nassau University Medical Center and is listed in critical but stable condition.
