Jones Beach water tower repairs won't be finished until 2011

Millions of people who visit Jones Beach this summer will need to excuse the water tower?s appearance for at least another year.

State park officials say repairs on the 80-year-old landmark at Jones Beach won?t be completed until the Memorial Day weekend of 2011.

A $3-million makeover project began in 2008 to fix cracks along the 231-foot tower?s exterior. Officials say that when repairs began, they realized the problems ran much deeper. They say years of exposure to salty water and air has caused severe corrosion to the steel frame, bricks and concrete that make up the tower.

State park representatives say they have secured an additional $3 million from the state to cover the unanticipated maintenance.

Local residents and beach visitors have complained about the scaffolding that?s been wrapped around the tower, saying it makes the landmark an unsightly eyesore.
