Riverhead Water District issues water emergency

? The Riverhead Water District is issuing a water emergency today.

Officials are requesting all Riverhead Water District residents and businesses to cease lawn irrigation until the heat wave breaks.

Officials say the combination of hot, dry weather has caused an unprecedented amount of lawn irrigation to occur. The weather is making it difficult to maintain enough water in storage tanks.

Suffolk County Water Authority is initiating a Stage 1 Water Alert and is calling on East End customers to voluntarily reduce water usage immediately.

Officials say it is an effort to avoid a more serious problem that would hinder authorities to provide water for fire protection and other essential services.
