Study: LI priciest area in New York to raise family
Long Island is the most expensive area in New York state to raise a family, according to a new study.
The Self-Sufficiency Standard study, which measures the true cost of living on Long Island, says a single mom in Nassau with two young kids needs about $74,000 for basic needs, while a single mom in Suffolk needs about $79,000 to pay the bills.
Don Friedman, of the Empire Justice Center, says the study highlights the inadequacy of the federal poverty level, which currently stands at about $18,000.
Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington) has been trying to pass legislation that would adjust federal income tax brackets based on the regional cost of living.
