Police: Man kills ex-girlfriend, then himself in Bay Shore
Suffolk police have confirmed that detectives are investigating a murder-suicide at a Bay Shore home that occurred while five children were inside.
Authorities say they responded to a shooting at 321 Brook Ave. last night and found James Snead, 43, and his former girlfriend, 42-year-old Karolyn Encarnacion, dead of gunshot wounds.
Officials say Snead was with Encarnacion at her apartment when the two entered her bedroom. Encarnacion's daughters, ages 12 and 14, were in the apartment playing video games with three of their friends when they heard a woman scream and shots fired.
Officials say the children left the apartment and a neighbor called police.
News 12 Long Island has learned that Snead was a volunteer with the Hempstead Fire Department for more than 16 years. He was also a civil service worker in charge of parking enforcement and traffic assistance, with the official title of "neighborhood aide" for the Hempstead Police Department.
