Suffolk Transit may raise fares starting next month

Officials say bus commutes in Suffolk County could be getting more expensive.

The Suffolk County Legislature has approved a rate hike of up to 75 cents, which would raise the fare from $1.50 to $2.25. The hike would be the first in Suffolk in nearly 20 years.

Legislator Jay Schneiderman (I-Montauk) proposed the fare hike and says there's a good reason for it.

"Our fares are likely to increase one way or another," he says. "What my bill does is it ties it to the provision of additional services, particularly Sunday bus service."

If the Suffolk Department of Public Works decides to raise the fare, the new rate would go into effect next month.
