Injured vet from LI says water sports saved his life

Corp. Hector Delgado was seriously injured while on a tour of duty in Iraq, but that doesn't stop the veteran from catching waves.

In 2003, Delgado, of North Patchogue, was partially paralyzed following a tank-trailer accident that crushed his pelvis and caused nerve damage.

Delgado says at first he had a tough time dealing with his injury. His weight ballooned to 230 pounds, his cholesterol shot up and he was smoking. Delgado says getting involved with the Adaptive Water Sports Festival helped turn his life around.

"Actually, I do more now than I did when I was an able-bodied individual," Delgado says.

Now, Delgado helps recently wounded veterans overcome their disabilities by scuba diving, kayaking, and water skiing.
